Day 1 of the Retreat: Carmen’s Reflection

The first day of the retreat was a day for everyone to get comfortable in the new space and be introduced to their new surroundings.

The first day was really fun and easy-going, we took this day to settle in before we started working on our projects. We arrived around 4 p.m. and had a small talk in the lounge area before going out to our space and having a little tour of the whole farm. Cows were wandering behind a small wall near one of the buildings and a little trail that led around the farm. The space we would be working in was large, with fake vines and fairy lights which lit up when it got dark, it was really pretty. We stayed there for a little while, going over what we would do in the next few days and getting to know everyone a little bit more.

Afterwards, we went up to our rooms to unpack and then went back down for an Easter egg hunt. We had to split up into two groups and figure out riddles. In the end, everyone got an Easter egg. Then we went back to our rooms for a little while before dinner. I stayed with two other girls in this cosy room, it had a lot of wardrobe space and a vanity table with a really big mirror. My friend had brought her Nintendo Switch so we browsed the games there for a little bit before going down to dinner.

The dinner area was rustic with a fireplace at the end and there were two tables which made an aisle down the middle of the room. There was a lot of food to choose from at the buffet, there were also halal, vegetarian and vegan options.

After dinner, we met up with everyone in our space and took part in a quiz, then started playing some games. There was one game where we split up into two groups and act out scenes from famous events, whether, from movies or real-life history, we couldn’t move through, which made it hard for the other team to guess what we were doing.

As it was getting a bit late, most people decided to go up to their rooms while others stayed downstairs and watched movies or played more games. My friends and I went up to our room and talked some more. We soon got tired so we got into bed but kept talking. We talked for hours about random stuff and how we were excited to be at Folly Farm, but eventually, we fell asleep.”
